Born in London, John Kember studied at Trinity College of Music, London; firstly as a Junior Scholar then as a full time student. His career since then has ranged from teaching, composing and arranging to working as a pianist and conductor in concert halls, theatres and recording studios across the UK. Much of his teaching took him out of London to Plymouth, where he also ran two youth jazz orchestras that fed a number of players into the National Youth Jazz Orchestra.
John currently has over 70 publications available with Faber Music and Schott Music in London, including numerous books for the jazz pianist such as the popular Jazz Studies, and more recently The Jazz Piano Player and The Pop Piano Player. He has a busy private teaching practice in south-east London and tutors students at the Kent Music Academy where his responsibilities are mainly for composition, jazz and conducting – representing his main musical interests. He was an ABRSM examiner for some 16 years and has been a regular contributor to Piano and Music Teacher magazines.
