Although early works, Britten’s string quartets are some of his most enduring creations and this April they will be given a chance to shine as part of an intercollegiate competition. Student quartets from the five UK conservatoires will perform in this one-off competition, adjudicated by Colin Matthews and Martin Lovett. The repertoire choice includes Rhapsody for string quartet, Quartettino, Phantasy in F minor, Alla Marcia and Three Divertimenti. These early works of Britten’s were specifically chosen as it was felt this created a particularly relevant connection with the young musicians taking part. The free event takes place at the Royal Academy of Music on 22 April 1-5pm.
