Carl Vine is the recipient of the 2005 Don Banks Music Award, the highest accolade that can be given to an artist by the Music Board of the Australia Council. The announcement was made on 12 November by the Minister for Communications, Information Technology and the Arts, Senator the Hon Helen Coonan, at a gathering of friends and music industry colleagues.

‘Carl Vine’s achievements make him one of the country’s finest and most prolific composers,’ said Senator Coonan.

‘Furthermore, his work as a performer, conductor and advocate for Australian music and music artists, particularly through his current role as Artistic Director of Music Viva Australia, has shaped the music created and heard across Australia and in many ways across the globe,’ said Senator Coonan.

Chair of the Music Board Dr Graeme Koehne said, ‘Carl’s considerable musical output reflects his commitment to different musical styles and tastes. His catalogue of works now includes twenty scores for dance, six symphonies, six concerti, as well as music for film, television and theatre, electronic music and numerous solo and chamber works—a remarkable accomplishment’.
