Dame Evelyn Glennie has collaborated with British choreographer Joss Arnott to mark her 50th, and  his company’s 5th, birthday celebrations.

Arnott, a rising contemporary choreographer, says that his collaboration with Glennie was the realisation of a ‘long-held dream’ having previously choreographed to Glennie’s music as an A-Level student.  Glennie, who previously collaborated with dance group The Marc Brew Company in 2012, saw the collaboration as an opportunity to push boundaries, stating ‘I am really intrigued by the way percussion can go hand-in-hand with dance’. The new work 5|0 is set to exhibit the connection between powerful percussion and contemporary dance.

Glennie co-wrote the climax of the triple-bill, Wide Awakening, with DanceEast’s Musical Director James Keane, and will perform the work throughout the 9–venue tour. The inspiration for the commission stems from Arnott’s choreography, which he claims to be ‘powerful, very physical and quite physically extreme’. Arnott states ‘the music is about rhythm, drive and complexity’.

5|0 is a co-commission between Blackpool Grand, DanceEast, Swindon Dance, Pavilion Dance, South East Dance, CAST and developed with Dance City. Supported using public funding by Arts Council England and PRS for Music Foundation.

5|0 by Joss Arnott Dance and Dame Evelyn Glennie opens at the Jerwood DanceHouse on Ipswich Waterfront on October 16.
