Carl Davis’s epic score for the 1927 silent film of Napoléon (directed by Abel Gance) is not only the longest ever composed, but also widely celebrated as one of the finest scores of its type. This autumn it comes to London...

On 30th November Carl Davis will take to the stage of the Royal Festival Hall to conduct the Philharmonia Orchestra in a special screening. In this performance of the elaborately tinted and toned restoration by Photoplay Productions and BFI, music and film lovers will be given a rare opportunity to experience one of the greatest achievements in cinema history; a seamless blend of traditional material and Davis’s own unique creative genius. The last time this film and music pairing were performed – at San Francisco’s 2012 Silent Film Festival – the LA Times reported that ‘the audience had just lived through one of the world’s great cinematic experience.’
