A Garland of Carols is a homage to Benjamin Britten’s Ceremony of Carols. Composer Anthony Bolton is best known as one of the UK’s most successful fund managers.

Through a city contact he met the composer Colin Matthews, who took an interest in Anthony’s music and encouraged him to develop his skills. Colin introduced him to another of the UK’s best respected composers, Julian Anderson, with whom Anthony has studied since 2008. Beyond choral music, Anthony’s works span a wide array of genres and include a Fantasia for trumpet, four cellos and percussion; Black Sea, a cycle of five songs for tenor and piano; an impromptu for solo harp; an octet for wind and strings; and a wind quintet. This charming set of carols includes a translation of the traditional Portuguese carol ‘Beijai o menino’, as well as original works such as Lanterns which evokes a barren winter landscape from which we are transported to a more mystical land in the middle section. Though originally written for trebles, the carols work equally well for female voices, and are suitable for being performed in totality, in smaller groups, or individually. The carols are written to be accompanied by harp or piano.
