Programme Notes

Most of After Sunrise was written in Sydney in the autumn of 2000. The piece is a companion to another chamber orchestra work, Aubade. As in Aubade, After Sunrise is to some extent based on birdsong, in this case a particularly insistent dove which I could hear all the time while I was working. After Sunrise is in three sections, slow-fast-slow. The outer sections are broad and lyrical with a lively dance in the centre. The piece was commissioned by Caroline Grace for the 40th birthday of her sister Ginny, to whom it is dedicated.
