Programme Notes

John Woolrich Another Staircase Overture (1994) I wrote this piece for the BBC’s celebration of Henry Purcell, ‘Music for a While’. Purcell wrote A Staircase Overture so I decided to write Another Staircase Overture, starting, like Purcell’s, with upward-moving scale passages (staircases, I suppose). The rest of the piece is a series of snapshots and fragments of characteristic Purcellian moments. John Woolrich
