Programme Notes
Peter Sculthorpe Chorale for eight ‘cellos (1984) This work was written especially for the 1994 Vale of Glamorgan Festival. Marked Con pietà, it consists of an introduction played by the first cello, followed by two statements of the chorale. While the motive from the opening is added to the second statement, the music, throughout, is austerely homophonic. It is also unchanging in tempo. The first performance of this work was given by Lontano, conducted by Odaline de la Martinez, at St. Donat’s Castle, Wales, on 28 August 1994. Chorale is dedicated to Howard Skempton.
