Programme Notes

This tiny orchestral fanfare was written at the request of Marcus Davey (Artistic Director, Norfolk & Norwich Festival) for a work to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the first performance of Elgar's Sea Pictures. A chordal motive moves upwards through the orchestra, at first as if under water but soon emerging above the waves. I haven't quoted Elgar: instead there is a partially submerged reference or two to another composer's sea-related work.

Colin Matthews

Reviews

‘A salty spindrift of motifs, its pebbly percussion disguising partially submerged references not to Elgar but to Matthews’ own mentor Britten.’
The Times (Hilary Finch), 7 October 1999
