Programme Notes

I made the text for this piece from fragments of folk lullabies from all over Europe, including the Hebrides, the Isle of Man, Portugal, Tuscany and Sicily. Sometimes I think that the most moving thing a large choir can do is to sing an individual’s (perhaps secret) thoughts. This piece uses that ambiguity. It is a gentle, quiet work, but with dark shadows: nocturnal fears, whispers, sleeplessness and premonitions of loss. Far From Home was commissioned by the Crouch End Festival Chorus.

Reviews

'A wistful lullaby... melodious. Woolrich's text, sewn together out of folksong scraps from remote corners of Europe, ranges through darker regions of sleep and dreaming than many lullabies care to explore."
