flex is written for unspecified percussion set-up and has been performed using a variety of instruments. 

 

For the premiere – the five main instruments used were five different-sized baking trays played with soft wooden mallets (which later changed where indicated to hard mallets).

 

The two upper line instruments used were ‘crash’ sounds: a suspended piece of sheet metal and a dampened sizzle cymbal.

 

Another performance has been done with wooden sounds contrasting with metal sounds.
