Programme Notes

Peter Sculthorpe From the River This work recalls my childhood in a small village outside Launceston, in Tasmania. I spent many hours swimming in the nearby river, the North Esk. There, while swimming, I often dreamed of being a composer when I grew up. This is the concern of From the River. The middle part of the work consists of a slower section in which doubt seems to be expressed: my music teacher had told me that all the composers were dead. Such a notion, however, is soon dismissed and the earlier, flowing music returns. Peter Sculthorpe
