Programme Notes
Peter Sculthorpe Into the Dreaming for solo cello (1993) This short work was written upon a request from Belinda Webster of Tall Poppies Records. It was part of her Uluru recording project, a gathering together of ‘cello pieces by ten Australian composers. In the International Year of Indigenous Peoples, the project marked the occasion of the tenth anniversary of the returning of Uluru, or Ayers Rock, to its aboriginal owners. The basic material of Into the Dreaming was inspired by a quiet, solitary walk in the Valley of the Winds at Katajuta, in the Uluru National Park. I began writing the music on the day of the tragic death of a very dear friend, Lillian Peart. The music, then, sings for her. Peter Sculthorpe
