'Speed the Going' is a short, bright concert opener. Episodes of raucous unisons, noisy fanfares and rushing scales are intercut with more remote and spectral music: a melancholic flute, whispering strings and distant chorales. The work ends with a pianissimo echo of the opening music. 'Speed the Going' was commissioned by the Orchestra of St John's Smith Square.
