Programme Notes
This String Sextet was written recently for the Chamber Music Society of the Lincoln Center in New York and they premiered it in April this year. It has a subtitle "Melodies From Drama" as it contains melodic materials from my opera "Sophie's Choice". It contains four melodies from the opera's main characters, Sophie, Nathan, Stingo and the Narrator and two pieces from the opera orchestra, one from the first act and the other is the opera's finale which is also the sextet finale. I aimed the sextet to be based on melody, so all the other material is also largely melodic. Although it contains considerably different materials and sections it is in a single movement. © Nicholas Maw 2007
