The composer writes:
Madeleine Mitchell asked for a nocturnal piece and I remembered Emily Dickinson’s poem:
“Some say goodnight – at night –
I say goodnight by day –
Goodbye – the Going utter me –
Goodnight, I still reply –
For parting, that is night…”
...that is Night was commissioned by Madeleine Mitchell for the 1995 Brighton Festival with funds provided by South East Arts.
