Programme note This commemorative suite is taken from the music for a remarkable film about the Queen Mother made by Jonathan Gili for the BBC, which was shown immediately following her death and is now available on video. The work comprises a theme and four variations. These, in the film, accompany scenes showing: the young Elizabeth; the Highland celebrations of the birth of her second daughter, Margaret; the coronation of her husband, George VI; his funeral; and, following her exemplary courage in the second world war, the VE-day celebrations of 1945.
