Programme Notes
Vers was commissioned by the Royal Festival Hall, for Pierre Boulez on the occasion of his 75th birthday. Following the double meaning of the word 'vers', this is a verse which leads 'towards' a brief quotation from my work BHAKTI, and towards a new (for me) improvisatory idea of form. Bhakti was commissioned by Pierre Boulez and IRCAM, and it was for Boulez's 75th birthday concert, given in his presence, that a sequence of short piano pieces was commissioned from 13 composers from 8 countries. This was my contribution. Jonathan Harvey
