Anderson, Matthews and Benjamin: Nash Inventions Julian Anderson, Colin Matthews and George Benjamin: Nash Inventions Julian Anderson: Prayer (world premiere) and Poetry Nearing Silence 6 March 2009, Wigmore Hall, London, UK: Nash Ensemble/Brabbins This year’s Nash Inventions concert featured four works by Faber Music composers, including the world premiere of Julian Anderson’s Prayer for solo viola, as well as performances of Anderson’s Poetry Nearing Silence, Colin Matthews’ The Island and George Benjamin’s Piano Figures. ‘Most impressive of all was the least assuming. Julian Anderson’s Prayer is a piece for solo viola that essentially elaborates a single, aspiring line with increasing vehemence and virtuosity… an astonishing tour de force.’ ‘…Anderson proved the star of the evening, with the eight miniatures of his Poetry Nearing Silence suggesting eight vibrant worlds, and his Prayer for solo viola taking us on a roller-coaster through an extraordinary musical landscape. His inspiration had been the viola itself, and what he calls its “dirty/mellow” timbre, and, in the hands of Lawrence Power, that was exactly how it came across. ‘Colin Matthews’s The Island… makes evocative use of an alto flute with unearthly string sonorities and plucked harp and piano, all combining to conjure the elusive but sensuous quality of Rilke’s verse.’
