Conductor Simon Halsey "commissioned Antony Pitts to write a piece designed to be a companion for Thomas Tallis's 40-part masterwork, 'Spem in alium'. The idea behind the commission was to resolve the problem of what to programme alongside the Tallis piece, and what to do with the forty singers once they have been organised!
As we celebrate the 500th anniversary of Tallis's birth, it's a problem that many choirs and choral directors will be tackling. 'XL', which can refer to the text (Psalm 40), 40 voices, 'extra-large' or 'excel', has been triumphantly successful; so successful indeed, that Simon Halsey recorded both 'XL' and 'Spem in alium' [in surround sound] with the Berlin Rundfunkchor for Harmonia Mundi.
