Claudio Monteverdi

(1567 - 1643)

Composer and conductor Claudio Monteverdi produced compositions in many different genres, most famous are his madrigal settings and church music (for example his Vespro della Beata Vergine composed in 1610) . He also wrote one of the first Operas, l'Orfeo in 1607. He straddled the gap between renaissance traditions and the early baroque style, composing in primarily 'secunda prattica', or second practice, in which music was subservient to the text.
