Gustav Mahler

(1860 - 1911)


Known as one of the leading conductors of his time, Gustav Mahler is remembered today as a composer of large-scale symphonies (perhaps most notably Symphony No 8) and song cycles. The symphony orchestra had reached a peak in its development when Mahler came to compose, and he utilised massive forces to create whole worlds inside single works.
