Over six performances between 22 November and 5 December, Roth will conduct a cast including Robin Adams (Protector), Jenny Daviet (Agnès), and Cameron Shahbazi (Angel 1/The Boy). Lazar is the eighth director to take up the opera since its first production by Katie Mitchell at the Festival d’Aix-en-Provence in 2012. Described as ‘one of the first masterpieces of the 21st century’ by The New York Times, Benjamin’s ground-breaking opera is a strikingly beautiful and rich score which responds to every nuance of Martin Crimp’s resonant, finely chiselled text.
In other news, this September Benjamin will conduct At First Light and Wolfgang Rihm’s Jagden und Formen with Ensemble Modern in Berlin and Hamburg. Benjamin’s return to the ElbPhilarmonie – where he was Artist in Residence for the 2018/19 season – will also see him conduct the Mahler Chamber Orchestra in two concerts that feature his Duet for piano and orchestra (with Pierre-Laurent Aimard as soloist) alongside the Janáček Concertino and Ravel’s Ma mère l'oye.
