Chanson et Bagatelle was commissioned jointly by BBC Radio 3 and the Royal Philharmonic Society. The first movement is a flowing song that shows the wide expressive possibilities of the instrument. The Bagatelle which follows is a liquid, melted dance with angular rhythms, its characteristic mood and colour deriving from the use of the harmon mute. The piece is dedicated to Peter Moore.
