Programme Notes

This quintet might have been built from the shards of four or five other pieces, which have been broken up and roughly glued together. One of these originals could have been a horn solo (the new, composite piece begins and ends with the horn); there are fragments of a tuba solo and chippings of chorales and fanfares for all five instruments. The overall colouring is dark (the second trumpet doubles on its mellower cousin, the flugel horn) and is extended by a wide range of mutes (including straight, plunger, harmon, bucket and whispa). The title is a twist of Emily Dickinson: ‘It - is the White Exploit Once to achieve, annuls the power Once to communicate -’ 'Exploit in White' was commissioned by the Fine Arts Brass Ensemble with funds from South West Arts, the PRS Foundation and the Ralph Vaughan Williams Trust.
