Programme Notes

Commissioned by Trinity College of Music, this short piece is in five sections, ABCBA. The fanfare of the title is obvious from the content of the ‘A’ sections. The flower part is alluded to in the middle sections, B and C. B is a slow rhapsodic episode, featuring a solo trumpet which was occasioned by nostalgic winter memories of the garden at Dartington where the composer taught in 2005. The jazzy saxophones in the central trio, C, were inspired by memories of a wonderful final concert at the Summer School by musicians on Herbie Flowers’ popular music course. Fanfares and Flowers was composed between December 05 and January 06 and is dedicated to Gavin Henderson who originally suggested that David Matthews write a piece for Trinity’s Wind Orchestra.
