Programme Notes

Paul McCartney Liverpool Suite One of the most popular songwriters, with over 400 hit songs to his credit, Paul McCartney first began to take an interest in classical music in the Sixties in such songs as Eleanor Rigby and Yesterday. His first major venture into the classical idiom, however, came much later when he collaborated with Carl Davis on the Liverpool Oratorio, written for the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Society’s 150th anniversary celebrations in 1991. Its story draws on the events of McCartney’s early life in Liverpool – his birth during wartime, his school days at the Liverpool Institute, his youthful aspirations and meeting his future wife, Linda. The Liverpool Suite features some of the best tunes from the oratorio, drawn together in 5 movements: 1 School; 2 Save the Child; 3 Let’s have a Drink; 4 Spanish Dance; 5 Finale.
