Taking its name from the Japanese word that translates as ‘foreigner’, Gaijin for koto-player, strings and CD was premiered in 1994 by the Adelaide Chamber Orchestra under Richard Mills, to whom it is dedicated. This rich and beguiling 14-minute work explores the ramifications of a meeting between the Japanese koto and that uniquely Western invention, the string orchestra. By deftly incorporating electronics, Vine allows further resonances to emerge.
