A new Debussy album from the Hallé and Mark Elder, released in July, features the premiere recording of Colin Matthews’ orchestration of ‘Et la lune descend sur le temple qui fut’, from Images Book II. This arrangement follows Matthews’ universally acclaimed orchestrations of the Debussy Préludes. The score of the new 4-minute orchestration can be viewed here.

This Hallé release follows on from a recording of Matthews’s orchestrations of Images Book I by the Orchestre Philharmonique du Luxembourg and Gustavo Gimeno. Matthews’ extensive catalogue of orchestrations also includes the surviving movement from Debussy’s early Symphony in B minor, two pieces from Ravel’s Miroirs, and Mahler’s Piano Quartet movement ‘Nicht zu Schnell’.
