In an event that will celebrate Tom Coult’s appointment as Composer-in-Association with the BBC Philharmonic, the composer’s violin concerto, Pleasure Garden, will have its premiere performance at Bridgewater Hall on 6 November. Daniel Pioro takes the solo role in the performance, with Elena Schwarz conducting the BBC Philharmonic.

Pleasure Garden was co-commissioned by BBC Radio 3 and Salford University in association with Royal Horticultural Society.

The work was written as a response to the RHS Garden Bridgewater in Salford.

On 18 and 19 October, Coult enjoyed a number of performances of his music at the Oxford Lieder festival, including his ensemble piece I Find Planets with the Hermes Experiment; Inventions (for Heath Robinson) and the first complete performance the new Gymnopédies by pianist Adam Swayne; and the world premiere of the song cycle, Wholesome Counsels with soprano Anna Dennis and pianist John Reid. The full festival is available digitally on the Oxford Lieder website.

Wholesome Counsels was commissioned by Oxford Lieder as part of the Albi Rosenthal Fellowship.

The text for the 18-minute song cycle was derived from material in the Oxford Bodleian Library’s John Johnson collection of ‘Ephemera’ which was then reworked by the composer.
