‘One of the most open-eared talents in that no man’s land between experimental and potentially market-gratifying music.’
(Touching Extremes)

‘The music [...] can sound chill and eerie: there’s singing, echoing, rasping, crackling.  At times, the piano emits single, spaced-out notes that sound like water dripping resoundingly on ice in a momentary thaw.’

We are delighted to announce the signing of a new publishing agreement with the Icelandic composer, Valgeir Sigurðsson (b.1971).

Sigurðsson is an acclaimed composer, producer, engineer and musician, and is the founder of Greenhouse Studios and the Bedroom Community record label, based in Reykjavík.  The label is also home to Nico Muhly, Ben Frost and Sam Amidon, with all of whom Sigurðsson works closley.  He is perhaps best-known as Björk’s record producer and has also collaborated with artists such as Bonnie ‘Prince’ Billy, CocoRosie, Feist, Damon Albarn, Brian Eno, and the Kronos Quartet.

Sigurðsson’s compositional career was launched in 2007 with his solo disc “Ekvlibrium” which included co-written songs with Bonnie Prince Billy, as well as mostly original material by himself.

With Muhly, director Stewart Matthew, and French perfumer Christophe Laudamiel, Sigurðsson co-wrote Green Aria: A ScentOpera, a revolutionary and olfactory work for the stage, which premiered at the Guggenheim Museum in New York in 2009.

He has since written “Dreamland” (2010), an acclaimed documentary film score, later released as an album on Bedroom Community, and also reworked as a 30-minute orchestral suite, performed thus far by the Iceland Symphony Orchestra and Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra.

Recently he has released his thirrd album, “Architecture of Loss” (2012), a 30-minute ballet score commissioned by Stephen Petronio Dance Company in New York.  The ballet is shortly to be revived by them on a US tour and was recently performed at the Iceland Airwaves Festival.

In addition to Dreamland and Architecture of Loss, Sigurðsson has also written Nebraska (2011) for string quartet, for the US-based Chiara Quartet, and premiered at the Ecstatic Music Festival in New York.

His music is beautifully crafted, producing haunting sounds from often limited resources, typically comprising strings, piano, percussion and electronics.

Future commissions include a 30-minute work for voice, chamber orchestra and electronics for the 2013 Spitalfields Festival (soloist - Puzzle Muteson), and a large-scale work for orchestra and electronics for the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra for 2014.
