Haze is a movement from Anna Meredith’s longer piece ANNO, arranged for string quartet and electronics by the violist, Richard Jones.
In this piece, amplified live quartet is doubled with a recorded quartet, played by the Ligeti Quartet, who reinforce and blur the lines of the material, creating a shimmering and woozy texture which slowly builds into something more direct and intense before fading away.
TECHNICAL INSTRUCTIONS
Haze is for amplified string quartet and electronics, recorded by the Ligeti Quartet.
The material for the recorded quartet is mostly identical to the notated score, but also has textural variety as indicated at Figure C.
The idea is to create a dense, woozy 'chorus' effect, where an unfocussed sound and slight discrepancies in tuning are part of the sound-world. The recorded quartet is tuned to A440.
The electronic materials needed for performance are:
Haze - Electronics STEREO 4824
Haze - Click Track
Using a DAW (such as Ableton Live), the Click Track and Electronics STEREO 4824 should be aligned.
The Click Track should be sent to the quartet only, and the other audio sent to Front-of-House.
The quartet will hear the Click Track via in-ear monitors.
A headphone amp (such as the Behringer MicroAMP HA400) is required to send the click output to all 4 players.
The electronics should be mixed to reinforce the live quartet.
The mix should grow to feel fairly overwhelming and intense at Figure C.
