The anonymous poem ‘This is the Key’ is the first poem in Walter de la Mare’s anthology for children called Come Hither. It is a mysterious poem, is a kind of spell, or mandala, its cumulative lines gradually leading to a discovery at its centre of a moment of stillness, before the spell goes into reverse. The Key of the Kingdom was commissioned by Barbara Wakelyn.
