Faber Music and Manners McDade have extended the significant annual support to Sound and Music’s young artist development programme In the Making for another three years. The Faber Music Bursaries ensure that talented young music creators from low-income families can access the unique year-long programme.

Since 2020, Faber Music has supported Sound and Music’s work with young composers and music creators, funding dozens of young musicians who would otherwise face barriers to participate in Sound and Music’s education programmes. Both Sound and Music and Faber Music are committed to ensuring that young people from all backgrounds have more opportunities to learn composition and develop their skills, and these bursaries will support us in achieving this goal. CEO of Faber Music, Richard King, said of the partnership:

“Our motivation for partnering with Sound and Music is to influence real change in the 14-18 age group, by providing access to In the Making for participants who are disadvantaged socially, financially, ethnically or in other ways. We are delighted that the Faber Music bursaries will enable talented young people in greatest need of financial assistance, enabling access for those who would otherwise face a barrier to taking part.”

CEO of Sound and Music, Dr Will Dutta, added:

“We are enormously grateful to Faber Music and Manners McDade for supporting In the Making over the next three years. Our longstanding partnership is rooted in the shared belief that any young person who wants to make music and sound should have the opportunity regardless of background. In the Making is a unique, fun and life-changing experience. At a time when young people have limited, patchy and unequal access to progress their creativity, the Faber Music Bursaries will enable us to support those who face the greatest barriers.”

In the Making is the UK's only year-long young artist development programme for talented 14 – 18 year olds to grow their confidence, skills, portfolio and creative ambitions. As well as creating and professionally recording new compositions, participants access an extensive programme of support, learning and bespoke opportunities to inform their future creativity and progression pathways, including a residential Summer School now based at the University of Huddersfield.

As Billie, one of Sound and Music’s young alumni put it: "In the Making gives young musicians the chance to let their creativity blossom. Working with incredible tutors and musicians is an unmatched opportunity and one of the most incredible musical experiences I've had. In the Making is essential to the future of new music!"
