Here is my Country is a 6-minute collection of four songs for soprano and piano, first performed by Mary Wiegold and Thomas Adès in 1996. Woolrich sets Thomas de Quincey (I will walk abroad), Gerard de Nerval (A Lost Night), Robert Schumann (Ave Maria) and Hans Christian Anderson, who gives the collection its title.  I will walk abroad is marked by shocking dynamic contrasts between piano and singer; A Lost Night treads briskly through shifting metres; Ave Maria is a fleeting, fragmentary flourish; Here is my Country sees the vocal line press against a trudging bassline.
