Premiered by Michael Kieran Harvey at the 1998 Sydney Festival, Carl Vine’s Piano Sonata No. 2 has gone on to become a work beloved by pianists internationally. The sonata is a veritable tour de force, moving from a declamatory opening and the roving first movement – filled with rich bell-like sonorities, to a second movement driven by motoric jazz rhythms and jarring syncopations.

"…a big 20-minute work, impeccably presented, crying out for a northern hemisphere protagonist – it is certainly an important piece."
John York, Piano, May/June 1999
