Th facsimile score to Colin Matthews' Toccata Meccanica.
Toccata Meccanica for orchestra was written in the space of a week in 1984; the urgency of its creation is reflected in the 10-minute piece’s furious energies. The machine-like pulse remains constant, with the development of lyrical material subordinated to its forward-moving energy. At the centre of the piece the machine pauses – “as if marking time in order to wind itself up again” says Matthews – before resuming its momentum. The piece ends with an echo of the opening before the machine resets itself.
