The score to Maw's Voices of Memory.

Written for the tercentenary of Henry Purcell’s death in 1995 for the BBC Symphony Orchestra, Voices of Memory is a set of variations on a theme from Maw’s Life Studies No.1 lasting 25 minutes. Purcell’s influence is evident in the closing passacaglia as well as the moody brass chorales; the ten variations that make up the piece unfold in dramatically contrasting episodes, with imaginative washes of orchestral colour.
