As part of Festival Mixtur in Barcelona, Jonathan Harvey’s Wheel of Emptiness will be performed on 2 October by Ulysses Ensemble conducted by Beat Furrer who programmes the work alongside two pieces of his own. The 16-minute Wheel of Emptiness is scored for a mixed ensemble of 16 players including electronics – the composer characteristically combining acoustic and electronic elements. The ‘emptiness’ of the title refers to the Buddhist sense of the word, which Harvey was fascinated with.
