US composer Derek Bermel has been nominated for a Grammy Award. This is in the category Best Instrumental Soloist(s) Performance (with Orchestra).

The nomination is for his virtuoso performance of his own clarinet concerto Voices, performed with the Boston Modern Orchestra Project and Gil Rose, on BMOP's much-lauded all-Bermel disc on their own label.

The award ceremony takes place in Los Angeles on 31 January 2010. For a full list of nominees click here.

Bermel is no stranger to LA. He has recently commenced a three-year residency with the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra, who give the West Coast premiere of his latst orchestral work A shout, a whisper and a trace on 12-13 December.

The Los Angeles Philharmonic will also champion his music this season. They have commissioned Bermel for a new ensemble work to be premiered on 4 May 2010 by the LAPO New Music Group, under the baton of their newly-installed Music Director, Gustavo Dudamel.
