In a performance recorded on 18 April in the recently reopened Royal Festival Hall, Southbank Centre, London, the Philharmonia Orchestra, with John Eliot Gardiner present a streamed concert including Britten’s dramatic cantata, Phaedra, with text by Robert Lowell. The 15-minute retelling of Greek myth is brought to life here by mezzo-soprano Alice Coote who has performed the work previously with St Paul Chamber Orchestra, USA and Britten Sinfonia in Saffron Hall, UK.

Phaedra is bookended in the programme by Tippet’s Fantasia concertante on a theme of Corelli, and Elgar’s Enigma Variations. The streamed concert will go live at 7:30 on 7 May and be made available until 7 August.
