Edition Peters will publish the first ever Urtext edition of a previously unknown string trio by Mozart which hit the headlines last month after the manuscript was uncovered by researchers in Leipzig.
Serenade in C K648 ‘Ganz kleine Nachtmusik’ will be released in early November. The new Urtext edition will feature critical commentary and a preface providing historical insight with contributions from Dr. Ulrich Leisinger, Academic Director of the International Mozarteum Foundation in Salzburg.
Thought to have been written in the 1760s while Mozart was a teenager, the seven-movement piece is scored for two violins and ‘basso’ (cello). Light and characterful in style, and lasting around 12 minutes in performance, the Serenade ‘Ganz kleine Nachtmusik’ perfectly complements its more famous counterpart, K525 ‘Eine Kleine Nachtmusik’ (A Little Night Music).
Queues of people waited to hear the first performance of this rediscovered Mozart gem at its premiere in Salzburg on 19th September; this new Urtext edition of the score will bring ‘Ganz Kleine Nachtmusik’ to an even wider global audience for the first time in history.
Rachel Topham, Head of Marketing at Faber Music, said:
“The discovery of this previously unknown piece by Mozart generated so much excitement both in the classical music industry and across the wider global community. We knew that we wanted to make a high-quality, affordable edition available to musicians worldwide as soon as possible – particularly as it was discovered on our doorstep in Edition Peters’ home city of Leipzig! This will be the first ever Urtext edition of this piece, and we would like to thank colleagues at the Leipzig Municipal Libraries, German National Library in Leipzig and Mozarteum Foundation for their invaluable support.”
Serenade in C K648 ‘Ganz kleine Nachtmusik’ for two violins and basso (EP20028) by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart will be published in early November 2024.
