Arnold’s 1977 Variations for Orchestra take their theme from composer Ruth Gipps (1921-1999), who conducted the first performance. Arnold offers six variations on Gipps’ 1953 Coronation March, taking in a rambunctious scherzo, atmospheric march announced by timpani, and nostalgic interlude, before a majestic finale. Arnold’s buoyant 13-minute score includes ebullient parts for trumpets and horns and soaring strings reminiscent of his film music.
