A Flourish for orchestra is a jubilant 4-minute concert opener first performed by the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra and Rudolf Schwarz in 1973. It was composed as a pièce d'occasion celebrating the 500th anniversary of the granting of a charter to the City of Bristol. A Flourish opens with fanfares from brass and percussion, and the chiming of tubular bells. A brief lyrical interlude in strings and woodwinds follows before a sumptuous, sweeping chorale for full orchestra concludes the piece.
