Carl Davis - Hollywood Theme for orchestra (1980/83) The first concert performance of Hollywood was given by the Wren Orchestra conducted by the composer in the Fairfield Halls, Croydon in June 1980 Duration: 4 minutes Hollywood is recorded by the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by the composer on Carl Davis: The World at War, Pride and Prejudice and other Great Themes, Tring International TRP099 (CD). Composer's Note This theme was composed for the Thames Television series 'Hollywood', a thirteen-part history of the silent film directed by Kevin Brownlow and David Gill. The series was first broadcast in 1980 and was subsequently shown in nearly fifty countries. I decided to write a warm and sentimental melody in waltz time, to reflect the early film producers' desire to appeal to family audiences. It starts modestly with a piano solo which soon develops into the full symphony orchestra, culminating in a triumphant fanfare - the unstoppable rise of Hollywood! Carl Davis April 1999
