Programme Notes

Chilean poet Pablo Neruda (1904-1973) dedicated his Cien Sonetos de Amor to his wife, Matilde, and they remain among the world's most revered collections of love poems.  This mixed duet and piano setting of "Ya eres mía" (Sonnet 81) joins my previous composition on a Neruda text, "Soneto de la noche," from my choral cycle Nocturnes.

"Ya eres mía" was premiered in the United States by Rod and Carin Gilfry and in Europe by Jeremy Huw Williams and Caryl Hughes with pianist Paula Fan who have recorded all four of my mixed duets (James Agee's "Sure on this Shining Night, " Dana Gioia's "Prayer," and Rainer Maria Rilke's "Dirait-on") on the CD Prayer - The Songs of Morten Lauridsen.

I extend my deep appreciation to each of these outstanding musicians for their superb artistry and to Dana Gioia for his marvellous translation of Neruda's sonnet.
