Hashivenu: Synagogue Music from Germany 1838–1938 presents 18 works of Music for Sabbath Evening Liturgy (Friday evening) for mixed voice choir and organ. The collection is dedicated to the rediscovery of German-Jewish synagogue music and brings together celebrated masterpieces and long-forgotten gems from a rich musical tradition that largely disappeared after 1938. The volume is published in collaboration with the Verband Jüdischer Kantoren.
Featuring music by Louis Lewandowski, Samuel Lampel, Emanuel Kirschner and others, the edition has been carefully prepared from historical sources by the editors and cantors Assaf Levitin and Amnon Seelig. A newly developed Hebrew transliteration system enables choirs with no prior knowledge of Hebrew to perform the music confidently, while complete English and German translations of all liturgical texts make the repertoire readily accessible. Suitable for synagogue choirs, concert choirs, church choirs and amateur ensembles alike, Hashivenu opens the door to an artistically outstanding body of choral music and restores an important chapter of European musical heritage to today’s performers.
