Merciless Beauty is Ralph Vaughan Williams’ 1921 setting of Geoffrey Chaucer’s poetry. Vaughan Williams presents three ‘rondels’ in Middle English – ‘Your eyën two’; ‘So hath your beauty’; ‘Since I from love’ - for high voice and string trio or piano, lasting 8 minutes in total. The first two are reflective and elegiac, and show characteristic folksong influences; the last is a more spirited allegro that pivots between triple and duple meters. This product comprises the vocal score with piano accompaniment.
