Commissioned by the Countess of Munster Musical Trust for the Monday Night Platform 2010.
This work was composed in 2010 and first performed on 11 November 2010 at the Sheffield Theatre Studio in Sheffield, UK, by William Stafford (clarinet) and Tim Lowe (cello).
Programme Notes
Written to sit alongside Midnight Closes, my song cycle for soprano and piano, these short pieces take inspiration from the Thomas Hardy poems set in the song cycle. The pieces are intended to either be performed within the cycle or as an ensemble work alone. Small fragments from the songs were taken as starting points in the composition of each piece.

Performance Notes
This is a performing score (the clarinet part is transposed). It may be useful for the clarinetist to turn the cellist's page, if the two are not sharing a copy.
